The Perfect 3 Days in Corfu
The greenest of the Ionian islands wears its Venetian, French and British past in one of Greece’s most elegant old towns — ringed by cypress hills, an empress’s palace and turquoise bays. Here’s a three-day mix of culture and coast.
Best time to go: May–June or September (lush and warm; Corfu is greener and rainier than the Cyclades). Getting around: buses reach the main resorts, but a car is best for the west-coast bays and hill villages.
Day 1 — Corfu Old Town
The Old Town. A UNESCO-listed maze of Venetian lanes, arcaded streets and pastel townhouses. Climb the twin-peaked Old Fortress for views back over the town, then loop to the tunnel-riddled New Fortress above the port.
Spianada & the Liston. Take a coffee under the arches of the French-built Liston on the largest square in the Balkans — complete with the cricket pitch left by the British. Pay respects at the red-domed Church of St Spyridon, home of the island’s patron saint.
Dinner — Corfiot classics. Try island specialities like pastitsada and sofrito at Rex (going since 1932), or ambitious modern cooking at the Venetian Well on a hidden square.
Day 2 — Sisi’s palace & the postcard view
Achilleion Palace. The neoclassical palace built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) at Gastouri, filled with Achilles-themed statuary and gardens spilling toward the Ionian.
Kanoni & Mouse Island. Head to the Kanoni viewpoint over the tiny white Vlacherna Monastery on its causeway, with cypress-clad Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) beyond — Corfu’s most photographed scene, planes skimming in low to land.
Afternoon — Mon Repos. Wander the leafy former royal estate, with a Regency villa museum and ancient Paleopolis ruins on shady trails down to the sea.
Day 3 — the west coast & beaches
Paleokastritsa. A string of dazzling turquoise coves beneath green cliffs, crowned by a whitewashed 13th-century monastery with bougainvillea courtyards and knockout views. Take a small boat to the sea caves.
Sunset — Logas Beach. Drive north to Peroulades for a drink on the cliff-edge above Logas Sunset Beach, a dramatic strip of sand under sheer clay cliffs, famous for its blazing sunsets.
Foodie detour. On Agni Bay, Toula’s is famous for garlic-prawn spaghetti eaten right by the water — one of the island’s great long lunches.
Best beaches on Corfu
- Paleokastritsa — turquoise coves beneath green cliffs; the island’s icon.
- Porto Timoni — a spectacular twin beach on an isthmus below Afionas, reached by a short steep hike.
- Canal d’Amour (Sidari) — sculpted sandstone channels and coves in the north.
- Glyfada & Barbati — a wide west-coast sand beach and a clear northeast pebble beach.
