The Perfect 2 Days in Nicosia
The capital nobody plans for and everybody remembers: a perfectly circular Venetian wall around a living old town of sandstone lanes, frescoed churches, Ottoman hamams and the island’s best museums — with 4,500 years of city underneath it.
Best time to go: March–May or October–November — midsummer inland is seriously hot, so in July/August do mornings and evenings and siesta in between. Day 1 — inside the walls
Morning — Ledra Street & the view. Start on the old town’s pedestrian spine, then take the lift up the Shacolas Tower Observatory for the 360° view that explains the city in one look — the circular Venetian walls, the minarets and domes, and the whole sweep of Europe’s last divided capital laid out below.
Late morning — Faneromeni & the lanes. The square around Faneromeni Church is the old town’s social heart — cafes full of students against a backdrop of belltowers. Drift on through Laiki Geitonia, the restored quarter of tavernas and craft shops just inside the walls.
Lunch — a Nicosia institution. Zanettos, in the backstreets, has been serving meze since 1938 — as local as the capital gets. Mattheos, by Faneromeni, is the beloved home-cooking mageireio alternative.
Afternoon — Ottoman Nicosia. The 14th-century Omeriye Mosque and the beautifully restored 16th-century Omeriye Hamam beside it — the baths still operate, if you fancy ending the day steamed and scrubbed. Walk out along the ramparts to the grand vaulted Famagusta Gate.
Evening — the new square. Eleftheria Square, Zaha Hadid’s sweeping white bridge over the moat, is the city’s showpiece link between old and new — cross it to the new town’s bars, or stay walled-in with dinner at Mezostrati.
Day 2 — the museums & the quiet quarters
Morning — the Cyprus Museum. The island’s principal archaeological collection, from neolithic Choirokoitia to magnificent Roman-era bronzes: 9,000 years in a manageable, world-class hour and a half. It sits just outside the walls by the municipal gardens.
Midday — the Archbishopric. Back inside the walls, the Byzantine Museum holds the finest collection of Cypriot icons anywhere, spanning the 9th to 19th centuries, and tiny St John’s Cathedral next door is frescoed wall-to-wall — the capital’s hidden jewel. The Leventis Municipal Museum nearby tells the city’s own story, floor by floor.
Lunch — modern Nicosia. Pralina is the polished contemporary cafe-restaurant the locals dress up for; Cookshop does the modern-fusion end of things.
Afternoon — Chrysaliniotissa. The oldest, quietest corner of the walled city: restored courtyard houses and craft workshops around the Panagia Chrysaliniotissa church. It’s the old town at its gentlest — end with a slow coffee and, if the evening is kind, dinner at SENTIO or the degustation room at ROUS.
Good to know
- It’s two cities in one trip: the walled old town for history and tavernas, the new town for shopping, galleries and cafe life — Eleftheria Square joins them.
- Summer strategy: museums and hamam at midday, lanes and rooftops after five.
- Day-trip base: the Troodos foothills, Machairas forest and both coasts are all about an hour away, which makes the capital a surprisingly good hub.
- Markets: the covered municipal market and the Wednesday open-air markets are the real thing — go hungry.
