The Perfect 3 Days in Skiathos
Pine trees down to the water, more than sixty beaches on one small island, and a bus route that strings the best of them together — the easiest of the Sporades.
Best time to go: June or September (the sea is warm and the town is calmer). Getting around: the south-coast bus is genuinely good and links most of the beaches, so a car is optional; boats handle the rest. Flights land at Skiathos (JSI), famous for its very short runway. Day 1 — Skiathos Town
Morning — Papadiamantis Street. The town's spine, named for the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, whose modest wooden house museum stands just off it — a genuinely touching ten-minute visit.
The Old Port & Bourtzi. Wander the fishing quay, then cross onto the little pine-covered Bourtzi peninsula for a fortress site, a cafe and views back over the rooftops.
Lunch — Kabourelia Ouzeri. Old-fashioned ouzeri on the harbour, plates of grilled octopus and a carafe of ouzo. To Bakaliko and Final are good lighter alternatives.
Dinner — The Windmill or Marmita. The Windmill occupies a converted mill above town with the best view of any table on the island; Marmita does refined Greek cooking in a garden. Both need booking in season.
Day 2 — the south-coast beaches
Morning — Koukounaries. The island's headline beach: a long crescent of pale, fine sand backed by umbrella pines and a protected lagoon. Get the bus to the last stop and pick your patch.
Agia Eleni & the Banana beaches. Just over the headland: Agia Eleni catches the afternoon breeze (and the sunset), while Banana and Big Banana are the lively ones with watersports and beach bars.
Lunch on the sand. Most of the organised beaches have a decent taverna behind them — or hop back to Vromolimnos, a local favourite with a laid-back bar.
Late afternoon — Evangelistria Monastery. Inland and uphill in the pines: the monastery where the modern Greek flag was reportedly first raised, with its own small winery and a very peaceful courtyard.
Day 3 — the wild north by boat
Morning — Lalaria. Take the day boat around the north coast to Lalaria, a beach of smooth white pebbles beneath pale cliffs with a natural rock arch offshore. There is no road — that is the point.
Kastro. Most boats stop below the Kastro, the island's fortified medieval capital on a cliff, abandoned in the 1830s. A few churches and cisterns remain, and the views are enormous.
Afternoon — Tsougria or the Marine Park. Short crossings run to Tsougria islet for a swim and a beach lunch; longer trips head into the Northern Sporades Marine Park, Europe's largest, where you may see Mediterranean monk seals.
Evening — Mandraki. If you would rather stay ashore, walk out to Mandraki on the north-west shore for a wilder, emptier beach and a proper sunset.
Best beaches on Skiathos
- Koukounaries — fine pale sand and umbrella pines; the island's most famous.
- Lalaria — white pebbles, sheer cliffs and a rock arch; reachable only by boat.
- Agia Eleni — west-facing, breezy and good for sunset.
- Banana & Big Banana — watersports, beach bars and a livelier crowd.
- Vromolimnos — a local favourite with a relaxed bar; Mandraki for quiet.
Where to eat
- With a view: The Windmill above town; Agnantio for classic Greek plates.
- Seafood: Carnayo (Karnagio) on the water and Kabourelia Ouzeri on the old harbour.
- Casual: Souvlaki tou Stamati, Maria's Pizza, and Cremeria Gelateria to finish.
