The Perfect 3 Days in Lefkada
Turquoise west-coast beaches under white cliffs, green mountain villages and a causeway you can simply drive across - the most accessible of the Ionian islands.
Best time to go: May–June or September (warm sea, quieter roads). Getting around: Lefkada has no airport — you fly to Aktion/Preveza (PVK) and drive over the causeway in about 25 minutes. Day 1 — Lefkada Town, castle & lagoon
Morning — Santa Maura Castle. The Venetian fortress guarding the causeway, right where the island meets the mainland — walk the ramparts for a view over the shallow lagoon and its salt pans.
Lefkada Town. An unusually charming capital: earthquake-proof houses clad in painted sheet metal, a marina promenade, and narrow shopping lanes. The quirky Phonograph Museum is worth ten minutes.
Lunch — Regantos or Sto Molo. Regantos is the old-school town taverna locals send you to; Sto Molo does mezedes by the water. For something more modern, Ey Zin and Thymari are the town's best cooking.
Afternoon — Faneromeni Monastery. A short drive up to the island's main monastery, set on a wooded hill with a balcony view over the town, the lagoon and the mainland mountains — lovely in late light.
Day 2 — the famous west coast
Morning — Porto Katsiki. Lefkada's signature beach and one of the most photographed in Greece: a wedge of pale pebbles beneath a sheer white cliff, reached by a long descent of steps. Go early — the light is better and the car park fills.
Egremni & Kathisma. Egremni is the wild, enormous one (access has changed since the 2015 earthquake, so check locally, or arrive by boat); Kathisma is the big organised beach with sunbeds, bars and paragliders overhead.
Lunch — Agios Nikitas. Park above and walk down into this tiny whitewashed village, where one flower-lined lane runs to a sheltered cove. It is the prettiest spot on the coast, and busy for good reason.
Late afternoon — Pefkoulia or Kavalikefta. Two quieter stretches just north, then head inland to Karya, a plane-shaded mountain village known for its embroidery, for dinner in the square.
Day 3 — boats, waterfalls & the south
Morning — Meganisi & Skorpios by boat. Day boats leave Nydri for the little islands offshore — sea caves, swim stops, and a cruise past Skorpios, the former Onassis island.
Alternative — Dimosari Waterfalls. A cool, shaded gorge walk near Nydri ending at a waterfall and plunge pool; twenty minutes each way and a welcome break from the heat.
Afternoon — Vasiliki & Cape Lefkatas. Vasiliki Bay is one of Europe's great windsurfing spots thanks to the afternoon thermal wind. Carry on to the Cape Lefkatas lighthouse, where white cliffs drop straight into the sea — legend has it Sappho leapt from here.
Dinner — Sivota. Finish in this deep, yacht-filled fjord of a bay: tavernas line the quay and the fish comes straight off the boats. Rouda Bay near Mikros Gialos is another lovely waterside choice.
Best beaches on Lefkada
- Porto Katsiki — the icon: pale pebbles under a white cliff, down a long flight of steps.
- Egremni — vast and wild; easiest by boat since the landslide changed the access road.
- Kathisma — the big organised one, with beach bars, sunbeds and paragliders.
- Pefkoulia & Kavalikefta — quieter west-coast stretches near Agios Nikitas.
- Milos Beach — a walk or water-taxi from Agios Nikitas, and worth both.
Where to eat
- Best cooking: Ey Zin and Thymari in Lefkada Town; Amente for dinner and cocktails.
- Old-school tavernas: Regantos, Sto Molo and Frini Sto Petro (up in the hills).
- By the water: Sapfo and Pantazis for fish; Rouda Bay and Kavos on the quieter south coast.
