The Perfect 3 Days in Zakynthos
The shipwreck beach everyone has seen, sea caves that glow blue, and a protected bay where loggerhead turtles still nest — Zante rewards a proper plan.
Best time to go: May–June or September (July–August is hot and very busy). Getting around: buses serve the resorts, but a car is what unlocks the north and the wild west coast. Day 1 — Zakynthos Town & the hill above it
Morning — Solomos Square. The rebuilt Venetian-style heart of town (all of it went up in the 1953 earthquake). Look in at the Byzantine Museum for icons rescued from ruined churches, then the grand Church of St Dionysios, the island's patron saint.
Lunch — the town tavernas. Malanos and Arekia are the two locals name first — both serve honest Zakynthian cooking, and Arekia often has live kantades, the island's guitar-and-voice serenades.
Afternoon — Bochali & the Kastro. Drive up to Bochali for the classic view over the harbour, then walk into the pine-shaded Venetian Castle ruins on the ridge above.
Sunset — Cameo Island. A tiny islet reached by a wooden footbridge near Laganas; drinks on the rocks as the sun goes down. Dinner at Prosilio back in town if you want the island's most refined cooking.
Day 2 — Navagio & the north
Morning — the Navagio viewpoint. The famous shipwreck cove seen from the clifftop platform above — vertiginous and unforgettable. Note the beach itself is reachable only by boat, and the cliff has had rockfalls, so respect the barriers.
Midday — Blue Caves by boat. Small boats from Agios Nikolaos or Porto Vromi run into the arches and caverns along the north-east cliffs, where the water turns an electric blue. Most trips combine the caves with a Navagio landing.
Lunch — Nobelos or Komis. Nobelos sits above the water near Agios Nikolaos and is the north's best fish lunch; Komis in town is the other serious seafood address.
Afternoon — Xigia & Askos. Xigia is a small cove with natural sulphur springs bubbling into the sea (you can smell it, and your skin will thank you). Nearby Askos Stone Park is a good, gentle stop with families in tow.
Day 3 — the south, the caves & the turtles
Morning — Keri. Head to the island's southern tip for the Keri Caves by small boat and the lighthouse viewpoint over the cliffs — one of the best sunset spots on Zakynthos if you can come back later.
Midday — Marathonisi. Boats from Keri and Limni Keriou run to Turtle Island, a low green islet in Laganas Bay with a sandy beach where turtles nest.
Afternoon — Gerakas & the Marine Park. Gerakas is the loveliest of the protected nesting beaches inside the National Marine Park. Sunbeds are limited, part of the sand is roped off in season, and the rules exist for a reason — keep to the wet sand, no umbrellas in the dunes, and no boats or noise after dusk.
Or swap the crowds for cliffs: Porto Limnionas on the west coast is a rocky fjord-like inlet with deep, clear water and a taverna above — no sand, but the best swimming on the island.
